The Cass County Commissioners Court last week approved a proclamation declaring March National Nutrition Month in Cass County.
Cass County Extension Agent Michelle Valentin spoke to the commissioners court about the need for nutritional awareness in Texas.
Valentin said, “32.4 percent of Texans are obese, Texas ranks 10th for the highest obesity rate for adults and youth ages 10-17, and obesity leads to type 2 diabetes, hypertension, depression, heart disease and death.
“This is why it is so important for us to recognize the importance of nutrition and to teach our community healthy eating habits.”
Valentin spoke about some of the events that she has been helping organize.
“Several groups are participating in recognizing National Nutrition Month by either hosting healthy breakfasts or a ‘Great Green Salad’ event, and these include Bloomburg Head Start, Atlanta Head Start, Linden Head Start and those participating in this Friday’s ‘Great Green Salad’ event (at the county administration building),” said Valentin.
