Atlanta Middle School hosted ELA Night

Special to the Journal

Parents, students and other community members recently attended the English & Language Arts (reading and writing) Night at the Atlanta Middle School campus.  They witnessed first hand several of the exciting ways ELA teachers differentiate their curriculum and how the students in return work together to achieve success.
There were 300 people in attendance that observed intangible ideas become tangible, student-created projects. After a short welcome, the fifth grade teachers presented a video of their students participating in “Reader’s Theater,” a cross-curricular dramatization of the U.S. Presidents. Next, a flash mob of seventh graders took over the stage with an ELA-inspired rendition of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’s theme song, where they used literacy device terms as their lyrics.
Parents were then encouraged to take a stroll down the halls to observe all the engaging and enriching activities that have been happening at AMS. Seventh-grade students presented several creations, one including a “Still Life Museum” of numerous well-known storybook characters and their authors.
Sixth-grade students displayed their “All About Me” autobiographies that were crafted on paper model iPads, with Apps illustrated as important things to the students.
Eighth grade students contributed their witty Hinky-Pinky riddles with illustrations from writing class, and displayed their character analysis projects from their reading class.
