Queen City plays tough, runs out of steam
By Adam Pettit
The Queen City Bulldogs were at home last Friday night to take on the Daingerfield Tigers.
Queen City continued its October tradition of celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness month with pregame ceremonies.
The Bulldogs entered the contest looking to rebound from a loss at New Diana the previous week while Daingerfield also looked to recover from a loss to Hooks.
QC played the Tigers tough in the first half and found themselves down only 21-17 at the break, but Daingerfield went on a 28-0 second half run to take the 49-17 victory.
Queen City received the opening kickoff and turned the ball over on a fumble on the second play from scrimmage.
Daingerfield took advantage of the turnover, marching down the field and scoring on a 21-yard pass. The PAT was unsuccessful, however, and the Tigers led 6-0 with nine minutes remaining in the opening quarter.
The Bulldogs got off to a strong start on the next kickoff thanks to a great return by William Harris to the Daingerfield 45-yard line. After a couple of short gains and a roughing the passer penalty, Queen City continued to move the ball.
On fourth-and-three from the Tigers’ 21-yard line, QC called on kicker Josue Rea for a field goal attempt. Rea had an outstanding showing in the previous week and has become a solid place kicker and punter for the Bulldogs.
The ball was snapped and Rea booted the ball through the uprights on the 39-yard attempt to put the Bulldogs on the board. With 5:43 remaining in the quarter, QC cut the lead to 7-3.
On Daingerfield’s next possession, the Tigers continued their offensive momentum and scored another touchdown, this time from 17 yards out. The two point conversion was good and Dangerfield took a 14-3 lead.
Queen City continued to pound the ball with the running game. On the next drive, Dwight Glover and David Price led the rushing attack to put the Bulldogs on the Tigers’ side of the field.
On second-and-11 from the Daingerfield 45-yard line, quarterback Josh Henry surprised the defense when he floated a pass down the middle of the field which found Price for a 45-yard touchdown.
The PAT by Rea was good and the Bulldogs cut the lead to 14-10 early in the second quarter.
Daingerfield answered with a score of its own thanks to a 23-yard run up the middle of the field. The PAT was good and the Tigers stretched the lead to 21-10 with just over eight minutes left in the second quarter.
Queen City began its next drive on the Daingerfield 34-yard line. Henry and Harris ran the ball consecutive times and on first-and-10 from Tigers’ 30-yard line before Henry broke free for a touchdown run.
The Bulldogs ran a fake handoff and Henry darted up the middle for pay dirt. The PAT was good and the teams entered halftime with the score of Queen City 17 and Daingerfield 21.
The second half began with QC playing well defensively. Ethan Hollis sacked the quarterback on the first play from scrimmage and the Tigers were eventually forced to punt. The Bulldogs could not keep their offensive momentum due to another fumble resulting in a turnover.
Daingerfield was able to take advantage and score again to stretch the lead to 11 with just over eight minutes left in the third quarter. The teams traded possessions for the remainder of the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Daingerfield started to pull away by scoring three more touchdowns.
The game ended with the final score of Queen City 17 and Daingerfield 49.
The Bulldogs are on the road this week to take on Pewitt in Omaha with kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
