The Queen City Bulldogs capped off Homecoming last Friday night with a game against the New Diana Eagles.
After Mackenzie Hozdic and Dwight Glover were crowned Queen and King respectively, the game got underway.
To open the game the Eagles moved the ball quickly and aggressively eventually finding pay dirt on a 15-yard toss into the corner of the end zone. The two point conversion was good and New Diana jumped out to an 8-0 lead.
Queen City recovered a New Diana onside kick and started its first offensive drive near the middle of the field. The offensive attack of William Harris, Dwight Glover, and Josh Henry pounded the ball against the New Diana defense. Glover took a handoff on the Eagles’ five-yard line and cruised into the end zone for the Bulldogs’ first score.
QC was unsuccessful on the two point conversion and with a little over four minutes remaining in the first quarter QC trailed by two with a score of 8-6.
New Diana answered the QC touchdown with a score of its own, this time on an 18-yard pass on fourth-and-14. The Bulldogs’ stopped the two point conversion but the Eagles increased the lead to 14-6.
Queen City was forced to punt on its next possession and the Eagles continued their passing attack but the Bulldogs were able to hold New Diana to a field goal on the possession and QC trailed by 17-6 early in the second quarter.
New Diana attempted its second onside kick of the game on the next kickoff and this time was successful in recovering the ball. The Bulldogs defense stood strong as QC forced a turnover on downs on an incomplete pass.
Queen City took possession on its own 22-yard line and from there Henry used his legs to advance the Bulldogs downfield while also utilizing Williams and Glover. Henry eventually found the end zone on a quarterback keeper on the right side of the field for a nine-yard score.
The extra point by Josue Rea was good and Queen City cut the Eagles’ lead to 17-13 going into halftime.
Opening the second half the Bulldogs fumbled the ball on their first possession.
New Diana was able to run three plays before surrendering a fumble of their own near midfield.
The teams traded possessions throughout the third quarter.
The fourth quarter opened with New Diana in the red zone and scoring from 17 yards out.
Later Henry dropped back to pass deep in the Bulldogs’ territory and the pass was intercepted for a touchdown as the Eagles began to pull away. With five and a half minutes remaining in the fourth quarter New Diana led 30-13.
The Bulldogs were able to score once more in the game on a 72-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Harris. The PAT was good and the Bulldogs temporarily cut the lead to 36-20. New Diana scored one more time before time expired.
