TxDOT hosts Bicycle Rodeo

From Staff Reports

Kids can learn all about bike safety at a free Bicycle Rodeo being held Saturday, July 23, at the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) office in Atlanta.
“Participants will learn about bicycle safety and maintenance, proper cycling attire, bicycling skills, hand signals and laws concerning bicycling, and will be riding through an obstacle course to practice what they have learned during the rodeo,” said Irene Webster, Traffic Safety Specialist for TxDOT in Atlanta.
“Those completing the course will get a certificate and we have 75 cycling helmets of various sizes that will be given away to participants.”
Participants will be divided up into three age groups—4-6 years, 7-9 years and 10 or more years of age. The rodeo will be at the TxDOT District Office parking area at 701 Main in Atlanta. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. with the rodeo starting promptly at 10 a.m. and completing by noon.
“Participants are required to bring their own bicycle and helmet, and parents/guardians are required to stay throughout the rodeo while their child participates,” Webster said. “Free helmets will be given out on a first-come/first-served basis as supplies last, so participants are encouraged to come early to register.”
The Bicycle Rodeo is being sponsored by the Northeast Texas Safety Coalition and the Texas Department of State Health Services.
