LINDEN—Final preparations for the new Linden Police station are in the works, Chief Alton McWaters told city council during a meeting June 13.
McWaters said the department is now using the new building on North Blaylock. He noted that they still have some work to be completed dealing with the phone system, but that they are “95 percent there.”
In April the city council, by unanimous consent, approved the purchase a building from the Good Shepherd Health System that will become the new station.
City Administrator Bob Swisher said that new facility would not only provide more than twice the square footage the department previously had, but it provide more secure storage, a zone a/c system that would be more efficient to run and space for in-house training.
Swisher said that main problems with the old station included storage space, the lack of a dedicated interview room, that it did not meet fire code specifications (only one door in and out of the building) and some mold exposure.
He noted that part of the phone system will include an intercom link between city hall and the station.
Swisher said that once the “punch list” of remaining chores is completed at the new station they plan to host an open house for the public.
