A prominent figure in Atlanta passed away Monday afternoon. Norma Price, wife of Price Hardware founder Roy E. Price Sr. died at the age of 92.
The couple was married for 67 years.
Mrs. Price was born in Caddo Parish Feb. 28, 1924. Her father was an oil driller and toolpusher for Magnolia Oil Company. She graduated top of her class at McLeod High School and later worked as an administrative assistant for the Atlanta transportation office, now TxDOT (Texas Department of Transportation) and for Attorney Tom Coats.
She was a member of the Eastern Star, and many other civic organizations.
When Roy E. Price, Sr. came back from serving in the Pacific during World War II, he saved $1,500, purchased a warehouse and started a business selling salvaged goods “and junk.” A few years later, his father Irwin B. Price and his older brother “Bogie” joined the business. As they say, the rest is history and lots of it.
Price Hardware was named Business of the Year in 1996 by the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and Roy Price was named Citizen of the Year in 2001. In fact, “Little Roy” Price is on the cover of the history publication, Atlanta, by Heather Pilcher and Sarah L. Ridpath.
The Price family has long been active in the community.
Price Hardware has been a member of the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce for many years and has helped area youth in providing many with their first jobs.
Norma Price was mother to three sons, Roy Jr., Gary and John; grandmother to 9 and great grandmother to 11 with another on the way in July.
Her son, Roy E. Price Jr., said his mother will be remembered as a gracious, down to earth lady who gave greatly to her family and community.
