Native Plant sale set for Saturday

ATLANTA-- Caddo Wildflower Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas will hold its 7th annual native plants sale from 9 a.m. until noon May 7, at the Cass County Expo Building off Highway 59 Loop, Atlanta.
Annuals, perennials, shrubs and vines native to Texas will be available for sale. Some plants available include Mealy Blue Sage, Purple Coneflower, Black-eyed Susan, Scarlet Buckeyes and Coral Honeysuckle.
A short seminar on the available plants and their growing requirements will be presented at 8:30 a.m. Those attending the seminar will be the first admitted to the sale.
Because native plants are indigenous to a specific region, they usually require less maintenance once established and are welcomed by wildlife and serve an important role in the lo¬cal ecosystem.
“Tropical exotics are found in virtually every landscape, so if you want something really new and different in your garden, go native.” said President Kay Lowery.
Using native plants in home and business landscapes saves water, requires little maintenance and limits the need for herbicides, pesticides and synthetic fertilizers.
Native plants are hardier and more dis¬ease-resistant than non-native species.
Native plants also provide habitats for wild¬life such as butterflies and birds.
The Native Plant Society of Texas is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the conservation, use and research of plants and plant habitats native to Texas.
The Caddo Wildflower Chapter of the NPSOT meets the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at Mary Daughety Senior Citizens Center in Linden.
Meetings are open to the public.
