CASS COUNTY—Just when you thought the election season was done until November, there will be another round of elections in Cass County later this month.
Not all local and state races were decided in the March party primaries. In races where one candidate failed to get “50 percent plus one” of the votes, a runoff election was ordered between the two top vote-getters.

Constable Precinct 2
The local race drawing the most attention is for constable of Precinct 2.
In March, Anthony “Tony” Harrison picked up 511 votes. However, this accounted for just 45.95 percent of the vote, forcing the runoff. Incumbent Jerry Goodson received 321 votes to come in second-place. The remaining votes cast went to Ronnie S. Wilson.

Senate District 1
The race to fill the Texas Senate District 1 seat, being vacated by Kevin Eltife, was between Bryan Hughes and the rest of the pack. Not only did Hughes lead in Cass County with 37.57 percent of the votes, but across the district he collected 47.98 percent.
This created a runoff with David Simpson, who had 21.16 percent of the votes. He was also the second highest vote-getter in Cass County. Simpson defeated James “Red” Brown by 13 votes to secure the spot in the runoff.

State Board of Education
Mary Bruner, who is seeking the State Board of Education District 9 seat, will face Kevin Ellis in a runoff. While collecting 52.43 percent of the votes in Cass County, across the district she came in at 48.45 percent. Ellis had 31.1percent.

Voting dates
According to Cass County Clerk Jamie O’Rand, the first day of Early Voting is May 16, the last day of Early Voting is May 20. Unlike the March election, which saw early voting locations in both Atlanta and Linden O’Rand said that for the runoff Early Voting ocation will only be held in Linden.
