Strong statements from Hughes Springs Police Chief Randy Kennedy captured national news last week with a Facebook video urging local and U. S. citizens to get an open carry permit and arm themselves stating “be ready when the wolf comes to the door because it’s on its way.”

“This is not a call for an armed uprising against the President of the United States of America,” said Chief Kennedy. “This is a call for citizens to legally arm themselves for protection.” As he watched the President’s speech on Sunday, Dec. 6, he waited to hear what the President would offer in the way of measures to protect the local, rural communities.

When the President not only offered no such measures, but suggested curtailing American gun rights, Chief Kennedy decided it was time to address those that he has sworn to protect and to serve. “We have more than enough gun laws on the books to deal with criminal activity. The criminal element will either use the gun laws to work for them, or they will go around them,” Chief Kennedy said.

In the video, which lasts a little over four minutes, Chief Kennedy urges law-abiding citizens to purchase guns, train themselves on the proper usage, safety measures, and procedures, and to obtain their “License to Carry.” “I am not calling for vigilantes. I want them to practice safety, obtain their license, and follow the laws,” Chief Kennedy said.

According to Chief Kennedy, the average Muslims are good citizens. It is the radicalized segment that has angered the American people, including Chief Kennedy. “We are not scared. We are angry,” Kennedy stated, adding that attacks similar to the one in San Bernardino have always been something that were believed to only happen elsewhere. “We are a rural community, but we’re not Mayberry,” Kennedy said. “We deal with big city problems, and do so with limited resources and manpower.”

And this is the reason for him calling his community to arms. Legally armed citizens can be the first line of defense, especially in rural areas.

Although Chief Kennedy acknowledged that no one can stop someone intent on murder, he stated that a legally armed, law-abiding citizen would be able to limit the carnage until law enforcement arrives. By limited gun ownership, situations would continue to escalate until law enforcement arrived on scene, leading to more injuries or deaths. In speaking directly to the President, Chief Kennedy said, “Now, Mr. Obama, you need to understand what the Second Amendment is for. It is not for hunting. It is there for the American people to protect themselves against the criminal elements, to protect themselves from terrorists and radical ideology and it’s also there to protect us against the government that has over reached its power. You are not our potentate, sir. You are our servant to serve and protect us first, and I suggest sir, since you’re a constitutional expert that you better review our history on the Constitution and understand that we are a free people and we are subject to no one other than the Almighty God and Jesus Christ the King.”

“And as such sir, I strongly encourage you to trust the law-abiding American citizen because you won’t fail in that and we won’t let you down. But if you try to disarm us, sir, then you will cause a revolution in this country to occur. So, please revise your thinking because we are not your enemy, the law-abiding gun owner in this country,” Chief Kennedy said.
