Monumental shift in health care kicks off

AUSTIN - The new health insurance marketplace under the Affordable Care Act began Tuesday, Oct. 1. The exchange will allow Texans to choose from a variety of pricing and coverage options.
Amanda Fredriksen, director of advocacy, AARP Texas, said among those expected to benefit are older workers, especially in the wake of the Great Recession.
“That’s because so many folks who are 50 and older who don’t have access to job-based insurance have been really either priced out of the market or shut out of the market because they’ve had pre-existing conditions that have allowed insurers to deny them coverage,” Fredriksen said.
